Georgia Forestry Commission Recertifies 135 Tree City USAs

The Georgia Forestry Commission was pleased to recertify 135 Tree City USAs which met the four program requirements (tree ordinance, tree board, budget of $2 per capita and Arbor Day proclamation) in 2011.    In addition to the 135 recertifications, four new Tree City USAs (Gray, Mountain Park, Nashville, and Tybee Island) and 19 Growth Awards were named.  Read more.

“All Things Live Oak” Workshop and Tour May 17 in Savannah

Enjoy a glorious day in Savannah with us, as The Georgia Urban Forest Council, the Savannah Tree Foundation, and Trees South Carolina present an “All Things Live Oak” workshop and tour on Thursday, May 17, 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., at the Coastal Georgia Center.  After a special welcome from Savannah Mayor Edna Jackson, we’ll hear talks by Dr. Kim Coder of the University of Georgia; Arborist Michael Murphy of Beaufort, South Carolina; and Consulting Arborist Dr. Don Ham.  We’ll also board open-air trolleys and tour some of Savannah’s most historic live oaks, including the Candler Oak, the Majestic Oak, and the famous live oaks at the Wormsloe Historic Site, with talks by Savannah Forestry Adminstrator Bill Haws and staff along the way.    For a complete agenda, click here.  Lunch is included.  5 ISA Arborist CEUs.  4.5 Category 1 SAF CFE credits.  2 GBCI CEUs.  Certificates of attendance available for all.  Before the workshop, read Dr. Coder’s publication, Live Oak – Historic Ecological Structures.
